Booking Through Thursday

From Booking Through Thursday: A weekly meme about books and reading.

This week's question is: One book at a time? Or more than one? If more, are they different types/genres? Or similar?

(We’re talking recreational reading, here—books for work or school don’t really count since they’re not optional.)

I usually read more than one book at a time. They are usually different types/genres. It's easy for me to do this and I frequently find myself in the middle of three or four books. I can close one book and open it up a year later and quickly figure out where I was in the story. However, I try NOT to do that anymore. For speed sake, I'm forcing myself to focus on one book at a time.

But it's so tempting . . .

Wow! A year later?? I totally cannot relate to this at all. If I've put down a book for over a year, it's because I hated it.

I can put down books for very long times like that, too. And after all the research I've done on homeschooling, I've decided that it's a *good* thing to have multiple books on different subjects going at a time--it gives the brain a broad variety of things to think about, and enables you to make connections between different subjects. So I usually deliberately take it slow with everything except just-for-fun fiction, when I find it too hard to put down until I know what happened!

I used to be able to put books down like that and pick them up again, but maybe my memory just isn't what it used to be. :) Anyway, now I try to finish books more quickly.

Oh I agree with Queen of Carrots! I love that my mind is being stimulated and that I can sometimes make connections I might not otherwise. It can be hard to pick up a book I put down a couple of months ago, but a little back-reading puts me straight. I need different books for different moods; it's not so different from wanting different types of food to stimulate the appetite.
Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in a world of "book monogamists"

I've put down a book for a while because it just wasn't what I currently wanted to read (what I'm interested in changes rapidly) but if I pick it up a year later I won't remember anything. My answer here: http://smsbookreviews.blogspot.com/2007/08/booking-through-thursday-monogamy.html

If I put a book down for too long, I won't be able to pick up where I left off. Certainly not a whole year.

I love that comment from Queen of Carrots! And I'm sure I'll use it for lots of justification in the future . . .

I'm not planning on breaking myself of the habit of reading numerous books at once, but I really must stop pausing indefinitely. Now, when I start a book, I keep going until I finish it. That's the plan, anyway.

If I leave a book for too long I just end up starting it over.
