Booking Through Thursday

From Booking Through Thursday: A weekly meme about books and reading.

This week's question is: When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

Absolutely! I have early memories of filling up bags full of library books. My mom set up one corner of the living area with pillows and books and encouraged us to snuggle up with Berenstein Bears and the like. Fun, fun! My brother grew into such a reader that there ceased to be room in his bedroom for a bed! Bookshelves crowded out the mattress, which spent its daytime hours in the hallway. I'd say we were readers. Lots of good memories.

I love the idea of your brother having no room left for his bed, he had so many books. I am envious! I had to keep my bed. Definitely the lesser priority!

Great meme! I have good family reading memories - Mom reading to us from The Hobbit as we traveled from Alabama to Maine one summer; my brother and I devouring fairy tales late at night when we were supposed to be asleep; Mom reading books AFTER I read them so she'd know what sort of stuff I was into; my grandfather urging me to read Adam Bede when I was 12 because "it's a good book" (and I did, and it was); Dad giving me William Manchester's biography of Churchill with the disclaimer, "The writer is very liberal, but he certainly can write!"

I was more like your brother, I think! Haha My own brother never quite to reading the same way the others of us in the family did. He thought reading was okay, but it wasn't his first choice of things to do on a rainy day. Nor his second.

My family is definitely a book based family but we hardly did it together. I am sure that when I was little my mum and daddy read to me but I don't remember it. My Bestefar is who I remember reading to me. He would read anything and everything as many times as I wanted!
My little circle of family reads together alot. Mike reads to the boys and I, I read to the boys and him. We're crazy readers!
Our book collecting as seen quite a lapse since our move, there aren't as many places here to buy used books.
I order them mostly from alibris.com amazon.com and ebay.com
My favorite books are in our room, the others are spread throughout the livingroom, library and savage room.
I love books!

Hi Carrie--

Thanks for visiting me in-depth today, and for letting me know you liked it! Always so encouraging.

I've seen you "around" too--I think I've visited you on Saturdays through Semicolon.

I love your Master List site--I should do something similar! My list won't be as long...but still, it sure gives one a feeling of accomplishment.

See you around!

Jeanne
