"The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can't."

— Mark Twain

"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark."

— Victor Hugo, Les Miserables

I'm about halfway through Les Miserables. Actually, a bit over half. I think, perhaps I hope, that we're back to EXCITING because Jean Valjean is back in the picture again. Any part with him is exciting.

I'm not quite there, but getting there. And I agree about Jean Valjean. I love how every section of the book is named after someone else, but this is primarily because the person named in the section is the impetus for some action that Valjean will take. It's a fascinating technique and one that makes me more and more interested in Hugo as a writer.

Have you finished it yet? I'm curious for an update and your final impressions.

I read this whole book in a day and a half back in 1997. I was captivated by the story, and crying over parts of it. I haven't read the whole thing straight through since, but I love picking it up and reading through select portions. Such a great book!

I have about 300 pages left.

#1 - I love the story.

#2 - I am very ready to move on with some other book.
