Children's Classics - Picture Books

Time for the second annual Chldren's Classics on 5 Minutes for Books. This time we're all talking about our favorite children's picture books.

I present you with, not only my favorites growing up, but my son's favorites as well. These were our first "readers" (immediately following Priddy's Happy Baby books). I LOVE sharing these books with my son.

Hand, Hand, Fingers Thumb by Al Perkins (the version I like is illustrated by Eric Gurney, originally published 39 years ago this week!). My son loves drums and has some odd obsession with monkeys making this book something of a fad book in our home. If we're out in public and he's starting to become, er, fussy, and I need a quick ditty to throw out I can say "one thumb, one thumb, drummin' on a drum!" and he's in bee-bop mode almost instantly. It's pretty fun watching him get excited about these early Suess readers. I'm so glad that they are still around (although I do not care for the updated versions with new illustrations that are period dated to the 60's and 70's).

There is a whole series of these books with each one focusing on a different body part. And this is how we learned about our ears, our noses, our feet, our teeth, our knees, and even our hair (because we all have it so enjoy it!)! Each book in this series draws attention to each unique body part and the rhymes are catching and easy for young kids to follow along with. I introduced my bookworm to these books at about 9 or 10 months. He started paying more attention to them around 12 months, I seem to recall, and at that point he had various parts of the book memorized and would "read" along with me.

Of course I must heartily recommend any book or books that have fostered bonding between me and my son. These books are top of the list! If you have yet to "discover" them for your family, I'd encourage you to do so. If you have a memory you want to share of these books, drop a note.

Thanks for stopping by!

I don't know if the Foot Book is technically the same -- it's a little sillier classic Dr. Seuss, but that's one that was read to me as a child over and over.

Sounds interesting. I never heard of these before.

Some how my parents didn't read Dr. Seus.

Great choices! I almost included The B Book on my post. It was one of the original Seuss readers as well, and I loved it!

Great choices...my daughter loves both of these! We have a copy of Hands, Hands, Fingers, Thumb that was mine whenever I was a child. It was one of my favorite books.

I may have to look for these - if there is a nose book in this series, I have that one and my girls love it. :)

Great books. My 2-year-old loves Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb. Just yesterday, sitting at the table for lunch, he kept saying, "Haa, Haa, gukers, sum!" (his version, of course). And we have & enjoy both the Eye Book and Nose Book.

We have a lot of Seuss books, but we don't have either of these two - we'll have to check them out for sure!
