1. ANYthing, I repeat, ANYthing by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I love the imagination. I love the positive endings. I love the wind blowing through the trees! I love the red soil, green meadows and terrific sunsets which I have personally viewed off the cliffs of Prince Edward Island. That Island will always be magical to me.
2. The Mitford Series, by Jan Karon. What can I say? Mitford is home? It is a place I run to for rest and peace whenever life seems a bit too bumpy or stressful.
3. The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis. My heart swells just thinking about it. I love how Lewis weaves truth into a million scenarios and conversations. I'm glad to be a Daughter of Eve and only wish I could crawl up a wing backed chair and sit at the feet of Lewis and listen to him tell me delicious bed time stories.
4. Inkspell, by Cornelia Funke. Speaking of imagination . . . I love a world where characters can pop out of books and interact with you.
5. The Great Lives series, by Charles Swindoll. They go a step beyond a "fun read" and bring the Bible to life. Suddenly they are more than just characters on a page but each life lived teaches me how to live. You can learn from both the successes and mistakes of any other person who has ever lived. The benefit of learning how to live from Biblical characters is that you get God's commentary on their lives as well. And, for a pocketful of change, Swindoll's also.
5. The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas. I have rarely found a book with such detailed character development. I'm so glad my husband encouraged me to read this. I wish I had yet to read it just so that I'd have the pleasure of "discovering" it again.
6. The Looking Glass Wars, by Frank Beddor. IMAGINATION! (Are you sensing a theme?) Classy and well done. I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to the sequel, Seeing Redd, which is due out later this month! (August 21st, to be precise.)
7. Safely Home, by Randy Alcorn. My plea to you is still that you go and buy this book. Buy it new. Buy many copies. Share. Read. Enjoy!
8. The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax (series), by Dorothy Gilman. Hats off to Sky for introducing me to the clever and ever-so-charming Mrs. Pollifax. I love her. More than any other sluethy type of character. She's tops!
9. Beauty, by Robin McKinley. Please tell me you have read this book. If you haven't, please tell me that you will. My friend Crista introduced me and I couldn't be more grateful. This is a lovely retelling of Beauty and the Beast and although I normally despise retelling, I cannot despise this one.
10. Getting Serious About Getting Married, by Debbie Maken. Simply because I've never done a book review that garnered so many outrageous comments! (64 to be precise!) I love a good argument but that was a bit much!

I do love Mrs. Pollifax. She gives me the chance to still fantasize about doing something startling with my life.
Except that I would make a terrible spy.
Oooh, I'd forgotten how much I loved Mrs. Pollifax! And Beauty sounds good. I also loved The Looking Glass Wars - I think our tastes are very similar.
Good reviews. I'll have to think of some of my best imaginative reads and give you a recommendation or two. There was one that I read fairly recently that I'll have to try to figure out what it was.
Hi Carrie,
I just ordered The Unexpected Mrs. Hallifax, a book I'd never heard of before. I like your list.
What a great list, love Narnia and also any Lucy Maud Montgomery. Love your blog header by the way.
