My Favorite Little Reader (& the books we love)

One of the reasons I love being on the reviewing team of 5 Minutes for Books is because they make a special effort to encourage busy moms to take some time out for reading. If I didn't think reading was important, I would not have this blog. But I do, so the blog exists. I enjoy it immensely.

One of the things that Jennifer at Snapshot, managing editor over at 5 Minutes for Books, asked me to do was handle most of the baby book reviews. This job came naturally as my son is a mere 22 months old. Babies fell more under my category than for the others in the group and I'm happy to participate in this way.

Reviewing baby books is both hard and simple. It's hard because there are SO MANY out there that it's difficult to know where to begin. If you set one foot in your local library's children's section you will be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of children's reading material.

While there are a great many of wonderful children's books out there, it's sometimes hard to know where to find them. It's hard to know which ones are worth the time and money and which you can live without. Over time, we've developed a few favorites with our son that I know I will enjoy with any other children we have. I probably will not stray too far from the list of books I assemble with Bookworm #1 because I'll be even busier when we add to our family! One of the goals at 5 Minutes for Books is to simplify the selection process a bit. We aren't the ultimate authority on children's books (or any other) but we can at least present you with a sample of quality kid books that are worth, at the very least, you taking a peek at. Since everyone's opinions and tastes differ per adult and child, we welcome feedback and comments as to your favorite books. We've also started a Children's Classics carnival (say that 10 times fast!) so that we can hear more about the books that YOU love. (We hope you will plan on participating!)

In the meantime, check out 5 Minutes for Books, if you haven't already. This weekend I'll have a post up about some of my son's and my favorite baby book series. I'm really excited about the series that I'm reviewing over at 5M4B but those are just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. There will be more to come so stick around and make a point to add to our children's book list.

For your enjoyment and entertainment, here's a picture of me with my little reader:

As always, happy reading!

What a precious photo!

I've recently started keeping track of every book we take out of the library (my sons are 3 and almost 5). Good Reads is such a great thing for that. I need to review more books, though. :)

You both look adorable!

I bought so many books for Amanda and I have enjoyed revisiting them this second time around while adding a few books here and here.

Lovely site, thanks. I find it hard to get the right mix of fun and education with kids' books. Bayard's seem to have solved this problem and cater for for all ages with their series of StoryBoxBooks, AdventureBoxBooks and DiscoveryBoxBooks (which is a special Olympic edition) They have work by acclaimed children's books illustrator Helen Oxenbury appearing in the Storybox series for September. In addition to this, they also have some great activities for rainy days: http://www.storyboxbooks.com/potatoprinting.php, http://www.adventureboxbooks.com/macaroni-picture-frames.php, http://www.discoveryboxbooks.com/skittles.php Enjoy!
