Reading to Know Bookclub - 2012

Reading to Know - Book Club
Bookclubs are fun. I enjoy them and have the pleasure of being involved in an "in-person" club here in town. But I also have found a great deal of enjoyment in discussing books with my online bookish friends. So, I thought I would be fun to start a book club which is hosted here at Reading to Know, but involves some of my favorite fellow bloggers. I asked a handful of other bloggers that I know fairly well to each take a month next year and choose a book for the rest of us to read together. These other bloggers will host the bookclub discussion each month here at Reading to Know.

Again, each month we'll read and talk about their selected choice! Each individual will lead the discussion but the common meeting ground for the group will be here.

Q: How can you participate?

A: You'll find reading list for the the 2012 Reading to Know Bookclub below. You can read along with us on any or all of the months. I recognize that some titles might appeal to you more than others. So feel free to pick and choose which months you'd like to participate - or plan to read all of them, if you like! I'll remind you at the beginning of each month which book is being read, and there'll be a wrap-up post at the end of the month which will be posted here at Reading to Know.

Read along with us, write up your own blog posts for each book you read and then you will be invited to link your post(s) which relate to the selected title of the month up at the conclusion of each month.

Q: What books will we be reading and who selected them?

A: Here is the list of books selected for the Reading to Know Bookclub along with information on who selected what book and which discussion they'll be leading:

January - Beyond Opinion, by Ravi Zacharias. Selected by Sky.

February - Running Away to Home, by Jennifer Wilson. Selected by *Carrie* at With All That I've Been Given.

March - The Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyan. Selected by Shonya at Learning How Much I Don't Know.

April - Any title by P.G. Wodehouse of your choosing (selected by Tim at Diary of an Autodidact) Just choose one. Especially if you've never read Wodehouse before. (Happy to make suggestions if you need some.)

May - The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. Selected by Amy at Hope is in the Word.

June - A Girl of the Limberlost, by Gene Stratton Porter. Selected by Stephanie at Simple Things.

July - Any book in the Chronicles of Narnia series (as part of the Chronicles of Narnia Reading Challenge hosted annually here at Reading to Know, hosted by myself) (Again, just choose one. And make the most of it!)

Chronicles of Narnia Reading Challenge

August - The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, by Catherynne M. Valente. Selected by Bluerose at Bluerose's Heart.

September - Professionalizing Motherhood, by Jill Savage. Selected by Stephanie at Stephanie's Mommy Brain.

October - Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Selected by Barbara H. at Stray Thoughts.

November - Jewel of Persia, by Roseanna White. Selected by Annette at Live, Learn, Love.

December - A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Selected by Carrie (that'd be me!)

* The wrap-up post for each book will be linked up to this post for easy access.

Q: Will you still be hosting the Lucy Maud Montgomery Reading Challenge alongside this new 2012 Reading to Know Bookclub?

A: Yes. The Lucy Maud Montgomery Challenge will be held in January as usual. As Sky is hosting the January read, I'll still be devoting quite a bit of time and attention to Montgomery. (I will also, for the record, being reading the Zacharias title.)

L. M. Montgomery Reading Challenge

For convenience sake, I'm choosing the read for the 2012 Bookclub in July and am combining that with the Chronicles of Narnia Reading Challenge which will be held per usual.

Q: How do you let us know that you intend to participate in any or all of the Bookclub reads?

A: We'd love it if you wrote up a blog post stating your intent to join and why. Of course, spread the word and invite your friends to join in. The great thing about an online bookclub is that you don't have to worry about the size of your living room when inviting guests to join in with us! The more the merrier!

Here is the code for the Bookclub Button for you to use when writing up your posts:

Reading to Know - Book Club

Looking forward to a great (shared) year of reading in 2012! I hope we've found at least one title to tempt you with and we look forward to sharing these books with one another in the new year!

First up:

Beyond Opinion, by Ravi Zacharias

If you have questions about any of the titles selected, where to find them, or other questions related to how the bookclub operates, please feel free to leave those questions in the comment section. I'll respond to them right away! Thanks!

Glad you posted about this, Carrie, as it had slipped off my radar. I will link to this post soon, and I have my book on hold at the library!

Yeah, I'm in. ;-). I'm going to read as many as I can! Question: when will the "official" discussion go to press (um, pixel? Blog?)

I love the variety! I haven't heard of some of these, but they look interesting. I read Girl of the Limberlost as a girl and have been wanting to revisit it.

Amy! Good question! Thanks for asking.

Let's go with the last Friday of each month.

January 27th
February 24th
March 30th

etc.

I want to do all of these things. I want to do the Lucy Maud Montgomery one, and the Chronicles of Narnia one, and the Reading to Know Bookclub. I'll definitely read the Ravi Zacharius book. I've been wanting to read something from him for a long time.

I'm excited to join in, thought I probably won't be posting on my blog (I haven't been blogging the last year or so). I'm looking forward to having some motivation to read something other than my usual choices. :)

I'm really excited to have some of my reading chosen for me. :) I think most of these will be pretty easy for me to get ahold of, so that's a plus! I already have a couple of them that's been on my reading list for awhile!!

Not sure I will be joining your book club, but am super excited you are doing your LMM challenge in January! One of my favorites because you allowed me to commit to reading ONE book!

Ya-a-a-a-a-ayyyyyyy!!! I'm very excited about this and looking forward to revisiting some old favorites and reading some new-to-me tales! I just hope my life settles down some before March arrives! :)

I'm especially looking forward to January's choice as I read From East to West a couple years ago and that's the only Zacharias book I have read. :)

Oh gosh, Girl of the Limberlost, that was one of my favorite books and I haven't remembered it in years! I'd love to read it again, but... yeah. ;)

Yay!! I'm so excited about this bookclub!

I've read Tom Sawyer and the Narnia series but the rest of the books will be new. How exciting!

I have already committed to no buying of new books in 2012 but I have about four of these already so I will try and join you guys on those months. So fun! :)

Stephanie Kay said...

Glad to see Leann is going to join in! I can't wait to hear her thoughts.

Totally in! After having no. 4, I haven't been reading as much! Definitely want to join in!

I'm so glad that people are finding a title or two which captures their attention. I like the fact that each month will be a little different - both in the role of leadership and in participation. It's going to be very fun! I think we'll all learn a lot.

Glad you all have decided to participate in one way or another!

This is a great idea. I've never heard of any of these books but I might give them a try. I'm definitely going to participate in the LM Montgomery challenge-she's my favourite author

How much fun is this! Have I been such a stranger to all things blog related that I somehow missed this? I'll be taking notes of the titles and hope to join you at some point in 2012!

I am going to join in your bookclub. Many of the titles sound interesting, and some will be bringing me outside of reading comfort zone. I may not participate every month, but I hope to for the majority.

I'm a little late but I am going to join the book club starting with June's pick (free on Kindle). Looking forward to it!
