What's On Your (or my) Nightstand - for February

What's On Your Nightstand

Somehow I fell off the bandwagon with Nightstand posts which is unbelievably shocking because I LOVE Nightstand and always have. I forgot about it AGAIN today until I saw people's post popping up, whereupon I was so annoyed with myself that I thought about just skipping. Again.

But no! NO! Let's start off right in January and keep at it because it's too fun to set aside. Plus it really helps me keep a general idea of where I'm at in accomplishing my reading goals throughout the year.

As for February, my goals are "simple" in nature. One book which I absolutely must read is rather hefty and I time consuming. My in-town book club is reading The Canterbury Tales. I rather suspect that will take up most of my available reading time and so I'm not going to commit to much else during the month.

As I've never read The Canterbury Tales, I'm excited to do so. And I am also scared to do so. But sometimes it's the harder, scarier things which prove to be the most satisfying. Let us hope that is the case for The Canterbury Tales!

Besides that one, the Reading to Know Classics Book Club is planning to read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. ($0.00 on Kindle, by the way.)

The last book I will commit to for the month of February is The Long Winter. I plan to read this one aloud to my kids that we might participate in Barbara's Laura Ingalls Wilder Reading Challenge which she hosts every February.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Reading Challenge

Overall I'm excited about the challenge of the first two (read: petrified) and am excited to read The Long Winter.

So, this is my plan!

What's on your nightstand? I'm off to find out!

I would be scared about Canterbury Tales, too. A lot of older classics are a little hard to read, but what I remember from that one, that would be one of the hardest. But I am looking forward to what you have to say about it. I might find it easier going now than I did when in high school or college (I can't remember which of those I encountered it in previously).

So glad you're in on the LIW challenge! The Long Winter is one I have been wanting to get to but I have one before it first.

You're going to read ALL of The Canterbury Tales? My hat's off to you! I briefly considered Heart of Darkness but realized I didn't enjoy too much the first (& only--back in high school) time I've read it. (Not to discourage YOU, mind you! I just didn't want to add it to my already full plate!)

Is it that time already?? I thought about it last week and planned to do it. I completely forgot... I might go the photo route of what's on my bookshelf and leave it at that.

I can't wait to hear what you think about Canterbury Tales. I read part of it and dropped it but would love to hear what you think.

Oh I was going to try to keep up with this in 2015 too! I already posted a few short book reviews today, so maybe I'll just post a late nightstand tomorrow! :)

I vaguely remember reading Canterbury Tales in 12th Grade during the year of English literature and seem remember thinking it was really funny ... and risquรฉ for this girl (at the time). I bet it would be interesting to read again now. And oh, The Long Winter is one of my FAVORITE LHOP books. It makes be want to curl up under blankets and make beans and cornbread and stuff like that. Although reading it as a mom was entirely different than reading it as a child!

Looks like a good list. :)

I love the Nightstand posts too. (Although they do tend to take me longer to write than most any other post.) Glad you got one up! The Canterbury Tales--that takes me back to college days. :) I remember trying to read it in a language closer to that time, and it was virtually impossible for me. But a more modern version was fun. I'm guessing The Long Winter will be your favorite of these three. :) Enjoy!
